I can confirm that direction doesn't change anything. Ex-AMS or towards-AMS, you can't pick your seat in advance on HV metal, even if it's KL coded.
I am booked on a KL-marketed flight UK-AMS which is now operated by HV through a wet lease. I had already prebooked my seat at reservation without issues and today, less than 72 hours before departure, I was able to choose one of the front seats without any issue.
