Points transferred from hotel, credit card or other programs DO count toward American Airlines lifetime status, but do NOT count toward annual status. Note that there is currently a 20% bonus on PC to AA transfers (registration required)...

...but I cannot say if this applies to the AA route awards (which already provide a superior ratio), or only to the 10000/2500 redemptions.
