No... they wouldn't accumulate indefinitely. Explorer is the entry-level status, you don't earn it. Hence at the end of the qualifying period there's no status downgrade, you simply loose your XP.

"Explorer" is the complete absence of status. It does not have to be "earned". If you finish the year as Explorer, then all of your XPs are removed. You failed to reach the lowest target - 100XP for Silver.
Thanks, this was an amazing explanation... very thorough. Now I get it. I wished it was this clear on FB website... I would have chosen KLM on a few other travel occasion the past year. 🤷♂️
