Yes, there is a difference.
"Explorer" is the complete absence of status. It does not have to be "earned". If you finish the year as Explorer, then all of your XPs are removed. You failed to reach the lowest target - 100XP for Silver.
Rollovers are only given to those who exceeded the "minimum" threshold applicable to their previous status level. Rollovers therefore can only apply to members who either:
- a) go up in status (meaning before the end of the respective membership year: an Explorer exceeding 100XP and getting Silver; a Silver exceeding 180XP and getting Gold; a Gold exceeding 300XP and getting Platinum); or
- b) having already held status (Silver, Gold, or Platinum), reaching the end of that status membership year with an XP balance that exceeds the threshold required to maintain that status level (meaning: a Silver ending their year with a balance above 100 and below 180XP: a Gold ending their year with a balance above 180XP and below 300XP; a Platinum ending their year with a balance above 300XP).
If you haven't earned status in your membership year (currently Explorer; next year also Explorer), you cannot have a rollover. Your next membership year by default starts with 0XP.
If you currently hold status, but failed to requalify for that same level for the following year, you will be downgraded in status (by one level) and you cannot have a rollover. Your next membership year by default starts with 0XP.
If you don't currently hold status (i.e. you are an Explorer), you can only get a "rollover" if you obtain Status (i.e. Silver) before the end of your Explorer membership year.
If you already hold status (i.e. you are Silver, Gold or Platinum), you can only get a rollover if you at least maintain the same status level, or go up in status level.
This means that:
- As an Explorer - who has no status - the only way you can get a rollover is by earning status, i.e. you must reach Silver before the end of your membership year (i.e. by accumulating more than 100XP in your fixed 12-month Explorer membership year)
- As a Silver - who has status - the only way you can get a rollover is by maintaining Silver status (i.e. accumulating more than 100XP in the fixed 12-month Silver membership year), or being upgraded to Gold (by accumulating more than 180XP before the end of their fixed Silver membership year)
- As a Gold - who has status - the only way you can get a rollover is by maintaining Gold status (i.e. accumulating more than 180XP in the fixed 12-month Gold membership year), or being upgraded to Platinum (by accumulating more than 300XP before the end of their fixed Gold membership year)
- As a Platinum - who has status - the only way you can get a rollover is by maintaining Platinum status (i.e. accumulating more than 180XP in the fixed 12-month Gold membership year), or being upgraded to Platinum (by accumulating more than 300XP before the end of their fixed Gold membership year)
Some numerical examples...
- An Explorer with 95XP who posts a new flight worth 15XP before the end of their membership year gets to 110XP - so they obtain status (Silver) and commence with a rollover of 10XP (the amount they exceeded that 100XP threshold by).
- An Explorer with 95XP who posts no further XPs before the end of their membership year failed to obtain status. As such, there is no rollover, and they commence a new year as Explorer with a starting balance of 0XP. If you commence a new year as Explorer, you by definition can only have a starting balance of 0XP (a brief exception to this rule, during the Covid era, has now ended).
- A Silver who exceeds 180XP at any time before the end of their Silver membership year, has earned Gold. They are upgraded, with whatever balance of XPs remaining after the necessary 180XP is subtracted going over as their starting XP balance for their new Gold year.
- A Silver who ends their membership year with 120XP has not qualified for Gold, but has done enough to maintain Silver. They start a new year of Silver with the necessary 100XP subtracted, so they start a new Silver year with a starting balance of 20XP.
- A Silver who ends their membership year with 95XP has not done enough to maintain their Silver status. As such, they are downgraded to Explorer. Starting a year as Explorer means, by default, you must have a starting balance of 0XP.
- etc etc for Golds an Platinums....
