a simple practical scenario when you need access to the lounges is when you just landed after a transatlantic flight and you wanna get there to use its shower. When I fly from US to FRA usually I don't have time to jump to the hotel so it's very convenient to use showers in the lounges. In this simple case you have no valid ticket already:-)
