I think I know the answer to this but I've had trouble finding the specifics online. Am I right in thinking that my BA Gold account automatically gives me access to oneworld Emerald, or does that need to be gained separately? For example, if I book an economy seat, am I still able to use priority boarding and have access to the lounges, or do I need to accrue that through the Qantas system?

Also, since I don't have any airmiles with Qantas, would you recommend that I start to earn them or should I nominate BA as my frequent flier and consolidate them in one place?

Realistically, I'm going to maintain my BA Gold account through work, but I'm likely to use Qantas quite a bit from a personal perspective.
BA Gold = OW Emerald (top tier)
QF Gold = OW Sapphire (mid tier)

Just enter your BA freq flyer number in the QF reservation and you will get Oneworld~QF benefits, including lounge access.
For international flights from MEL & SYD that will include the QF first class lounge, that have a good reputation.

Keep crediting to BAEC. Having multiple ffp's in one alliance is generally not a good idea.

Edit
From your profile noticed you have AU listed. In AU for ever?
You will need to get 2/4 qualifying BA/IB flights to maintain BA status. Can be harder if living in AU.
