The trend has been moving to spend based. Segment based has never been a category most have used to qualify.
You're right, I always forget about those because even award tickets count. I requalified for 1k status this year without a single cash ticket on United. The trend is certainly going towards interacting with a loyalty program and not actually flying the airline. Airlines are all pushing earning through credit card spend and spending with partners whether it be shopping through portal links or linking loyalty accounts. I expect Alaska to continue moving that direction as well.
