They did ask for a room number when sitting down for breakfast.
I did not see any a la carte breakfast menus with prices. Just the breakfast selection menu.
I did not see anyone paying a bill at breakfast, charging to room or otherwise.
I would guess that it was status. But I wouldn't bet on it.

I was there as Titanium member. As it is AC hotel you get 1000 points welcome gift and one more options which is additional 750 points or free breakfast, whereby free breakfast is almost default choice. This was one of the best hotel regarding status recognition and customer care in my travel history - they have my recomendation.
