Heck, before my most recent TCON I had spent most of the day out and about and only arrived at the gate area maybe 10-15 minutes before boarding started. I probably wouldn't need to plug my phone in if it just stayed in my pocket all flight (and I'd much rather not be worrying about cables in the unlikely event that something goes wrong with takeoff/landing) but I'd certainly prefer to watch a movie or two without having to worry about getting interrupted by a low battery warning.
