If I don't make that 0955am flight, would I be put on the later SFO flight or should I look now to get re-booked onto the later one? I'd rather fly upstairs on the A380 but equally don't want to really risk missing the flight.
The mates are on the same flights the next day and have changed it so they now fly down the day before and are spending the night at an LHR hotel. I'd rather not add more costs onto an already expensive flight by doing the same.
So the changes bring your connection down to 80 minutes, which unfortunately, is above the minimum - as such, BA will only make changes in accordance to the rules & costs of the ticket.
Without knowing the fare rules, or the exact dates involved no-one can say what the cost to change would be - it could be zero with a fully flexible ticket, to much more with an inflexible one. As it would be a voluntary change by yourself, BA won't be on the hook for the hotel cost if you go down the previous night.
If it's a BA
Holiday booking, they are often much more flexible - give them a call and see what they say.
80 mins coming off an early morning domestic is going to be fine most of the time tbh, if you don't make the connection, BA will rebook you on the next available flight (and there will be a whole load of indirect options if needed, as they will rebook on American Airlines as well)
Edit: Just to add, if the total schedule change is more than
2 hours, that brings other options into play, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.
