Are you referring to the "Timeline: Important times and deadlines" section, quoted below? I don't see a requirement to pick up tickets the night before departure.
  1. Change and cancellation deadline: 6 minutes before departure or 10:54 pm JST on the day of departure, whichever is sooner.
  2. Pickup deadline: 11:00 pm JST on the day of departure, regardless of departure time.
  • There is a steep no-show fee (equal to the entire seat fare!) for not picking up a reserved seat ticket by this deadline, which would be charged to the CC on file.
