Fare searches on UA are faulty if a partner flight is included.

PlusPoints can be used for UA or LH on LH tickets.

But LH W fares on UA or LH tickets can not be upgraded with PlusPoints

Also UA fares searches likely don't validate married segments

It is generally a flaky function.
