I believe it's a smart move by Alaska to encourage more spend on their profitable card business rather than on competing high end travel cards. It may not sway those who are true road warriors racking up miles on a number of airlines, but to those of us doing a majority of flying on Alaska it gives us more incentive to make sure at least $50,000 of our spend goes to our Alaska cards.
I have been predicting that for a while now in the various threads for the annual promos that offered some version of EQM for spend. 4K for $10k is more generous than I expected. I don’t know yet if I will continue to work on AS status (currently seriously contemplating AA status going forward even if AS likely will be my most frequently used domestic carrier). But if I do, it’s nice to have the ability to top off the EQM bucket with some year-end spend as needed. I don’t think I would direct $50k to the AS Visa card, though. Too much opportunity cost.
