Why such high spend on a 1x card? You can spend it on cards that are at a minimum 2x and some of the spend should be on 3x-5x on other cards. You left hundreds of thousands of points on the table. The retention offer is the least of your problems.
You don't really know how much of that spend was in the 1x category- perhaps OP charges a lot of airfare which is 5x or books hotels through Amex travel also at 5x.
I am like you and spread my spend over several cards depending on the category of the spend, however I do see a certain beauty of putting everything on a single card and having only one single bill to deal with. Not everyone has the time to chase down every last point possible and will just take whatever they can get.
