I have it on very good authority that in some/many/all (delete as you see fit) hotels where there's a 10% service charge in Asia then this money forms a critical and variable part of all the employees' monthly salary.

So, the hotel employees have a basic salary plus a variable element based on the 10% service charge which obviously varies based on occupancy and rates. Apparently this is normal in hospitality around here. In case anyone thinks people who work in hotels are over-paid, the reason I know this is that I was told this practice cased a problem for foreign employees in Thai hotels during the Great Plague because their monthly salaries could not reach the minimum wage thresholds required for foreign employees under Thai law due to low occupancies.

I'm surprised a Moxy - a pretty core Marriott brand - is allowed to sell its rooms at different rates (achieved by not including the 10% service charge) to the public excluding Bonvoy benefits. I do expect this from Design Hotels where the Bonvoy affiliation is somewhat looser but I thought a Moxy would be a core Marriott brand. We live and learn.
