It does vary so wildly though. I just flew YUL-CDG last night, which was R9 24 hrs out. I didn't take a screenshot of the flight status but if I remember right, less than half of J was booked and 10+ people cleared. PY went out with half the seats empty. Tonight, tomorrow and Thursday there are all YUL-CDG flights that are R8 or R9.
I believe the wiki says R space will not get cleared within T -36hr, but I already saw a couple of times I got upgraded after OLCI but before the gate.
I wonder if there is a change of practice regarding this. Probably we need more data points.
