The adage that you should book in J if you want to fly in J definitely applies.
The eUps game is definitely for people with stronger stomachs than mine, especially for longer flights than this one.
It does vary so wildly though. I just flew YUL-CDG last night, which was R9 24 hrs out. I didn't take a screenshot of the flight status but if I remember right, less than half of J was booked and 10+ people cleared. PY went out with half the seats empty. Tonight, tomorrow and Thursday there are all YUL-CDG flights that are R8 or R9.
