I had my OCI issued in 2010 and have been traveling to India regularly since. This last week flew from MXP to DEL on AI, and the document check person before getting in the checkin line asked for my old passport which is stamped in the OCI (this was 3 passports ago, and I haven't carried it since the regulations changed in 2015). I was a little taken aback since this has never been asked for many years (also haven't flown with AI before so perhaps it is an AI thing).
Anyways, I insisted that this was not needed, and she then went to the checkin counter and asked (presumably) an AI staff (I am guessing she was contracted and not AI staff). She came back and said that I was assuming that risk and the airline would not be liable if i was denied entry into India. I simply nodded was given a boarding pass.
As usual, at immigration at DEL, no one bothered to ask for my other passport and entered as usual. I have not updated anything on the OCI website, ever! It works just fine every time. I wish the airlines got this piece accurately to avoid causing unnecessary grief to passengers.
To be fair, AA, BA, UA, JL, NH, QR,EY, OZ have never asked me for this, so maybe it is an AI thing.
