If you compare the mileage for both routes you'll see that the latter is almost 700 miles longer and thus more expensive.
You need to break the trip up into two 'flights' on ITA to make it work, e.g. BUD-JFK and JFK-LAX.

In this past year, unfortunately, ITA has some troubled finding (complicate) routes or sending the data to AA to ticket it.

I originally searched for BUD-HEL-LHR|LHR-JFK-SFO-LAX in the outbound segment but it wouldn't price but trying this separate routing, BUD-HEL-LHR-JFK|JFK-SFO-LAX seems to work. Even when I tried BUD-HEL-LHR|LHR-JFK-SFO|SFO-LAX forcing the flight numbers I knew had availabilities it still wouldn't price saying no flights found.
