Hilton Brooklyn New York

Index to Genius1 Trip Reports

Last December I stayed for 2 nights at this property - my first time in Brooklyn. Location-wise, whilst the hotel itself is on a relatively quiet street, it's not far to walk to the main sights of Brooklyn, with multiple subway stations only a few minutes away.

The property occupies a small footprint at ground level, and the lobby and restaurant (part of which doubles as the Executive lounge after breakfast) is all one space, just across from reception. My welcome here was typically brusque in New York fashion.

My Executive room on the 6th floor was reasonably spacious for a standard New York hotel room, although the decor was somewhat gloomy. The old fashioned air conditioning unit below the window gave me strong motel vibes and was noisy, and its location meant there were no curtains to soften the room (albeit the provided blinds attempted to be blackout). The room was clean and reasonably well maintained. A coffee machine was provided, and complimentary bottled water was offered at reception. Power and USB sockets were plentiful, including either side of the king size bed. There were no robes or slippers, although the latter (and perhaps the former had I needed one) were available on request. Room service dining was not available during my stay (quite poor for a supposed 4-star hotel), but looking at the hotel's website is apparently now available from 06:00-23:00 daily.

The bathroom was a standard Hilton offering, including a walk-in shower in lieu of a bath (always my preference if there's only room for one), and Crabtree and Evelyn amenities in large bottles. There were no facecloths, if you're interested in that detail.

My room offered a view over a row of modern townhouses, with a partial New York skyline view beyond and a nice sunrise.

Breakfast in the hotel's restaurant Black Walnut was adequate if unexciting. A full buffet was available for USD30 (if not included in the rate), with a limited à la carte menu also offered at additional cost. Cereal, pastries, fruit, yogurt, porridge and a small selection of hot items were all available on the buffet, which is located in the part of the restaurant that is closed off to become the Executive lounge later in the day (and as such offers a small amount of armchair and non-standard table seating).

The Executive lounge (or rather, room) offerings later in the day included soft drinks, packaged snacks, whole fruit and a rather sad selection of salad and hot canapés. The lounge is unstaffed aside from sporadic checking on the buffet. This really isn't the sort of place you'd want to spend any amount of time, particularly as none of the public areas aside from the very front of the lobby have any natural light.

The property has a gym, although I didn't take a look on this stay.

The Hilton Brooklyn New York is a perfectly adequate property, but one which I wouldn't rush to return to as the rooms, whilst spacious for the city, are a little dismal in decor and the overall atmosphere is somewhat lacking.
