Is the Asian Vegetarian a reasonably safe option? No cheese?
Not a safe option at all, unfortunately. The AVML is generally Indian-style food like curry. It will almost certainly contain dairy; probably tomatoes as well.
Some airlines offer a Vegetarian Oriental meal (VOML) -- generally a Chinese or Japanese style meal, prepared without dairy. However Air Canada isn't one of them; their list is here:

Don't want to have to resort to bringing food.....
Unfortunately ordering the vegan meal (VGML) and bringing food for a backup is probably going to be the safest option. =/
