The reason I use them at 1x is because $3.50 for 250 miles and LP (plus bonus) is still a very good deal. This is about 1/2 to 1/3 of the price if the very cheapest hotel deals and many people book those and don't stay.
For spend that otherwise gets no bonus it seems better than the alternative (ie, paying directly with a CC)
So for me, I accept the slight liquidity premium of bAAh - and the ability to get 10k+ RDMs/LPs at a time - vs the 1x at GCdotcom multiplied by all the annoyances associated with Cartera.
For non-bonused spend, it's much easier, in my opinion, to go the 5x fee-free gift card route on the Chase Ink...
At 3x, it was a much more difficult choice, and I would lean toward AA.
