The reason I use them at 1x is because $3.50 for 250 miles and LP (plus bonus) is still a very good deal. This is about 1/2 to 1/3 of the price if the very cheapest hotel deals and many people book those and don't stay.

For spend that otherwise gets no bonus it seems better than the alternative (ie, paying directly with a CC)
The moral of the story is that next time there is a 3x we have to go all in, like there is no tomorrow…
