It's not clear what they do with this information. I doubt they say "Wow, there are a lot of skis on tomorrow's flight, so let's substitute a bigger plane". Maybe they just use this as a way of deciding whose skis get on if they don't all fit. Conceivably if I called them 2 days before my flight and they told me my skis might not fit, I'd choose to rent skis at the destination, but I'd probably try to check mine anyway since renting is always a backup option.
BA can do a lot if they have at least 72 hours of warning. They can for example not accepting certain freights on flights, they can delay a planned repair by a day or two, they can use some of the “backup” planes, etc. BA wont put an A380 on a GVA route but they can move around planes for certain flights, etc. There are 12 GVA for example for tomorrow some on A320 some on A319. BA could have easily put one or two A321 which could boost cargo capacity by a lot. Obviously not at the last minute but 72 hours is more than enough to move things around.
