You are 100% correct, unfortunately for our travel dates the mileage spread is huge. Using $0.01 mile valuation, I actually save a couple bucks paying BA the outrageous fees vs using many, many more miles for AA metal and the correspondingly lower fees.
Slightly off topic, but how does BA business compare to AA business? Close enough to not be a consideration or dramatically different?
In some ways arguably better. As it's a prime US route the chances of getting a plane with the more modern Club Suite product is high. CS is based on the same base seat (Collins Super Diamond) as the AA seat, but has a door and a few other bits and pieces that make it slightly better IMHO. Food is much of a muchness and really more down to taste. Service may be more personable on BA and you don't get the nonsense of the seatbelt sign being turned on until cruising altitude and being turned back on at the slightest hint of turbulence as you get on US carriers.
The bigger consideration in my eyes would be that you get UK261 protection in the event of delays or cancellations when booked on BA metal, but not on AA metal when originating from outside the UK/EU.
