Just went through preclearance on a flight back to JFK. In my case, I had to go to the F gate area in the new Terminal A where a 15 minute shuttle takes you to the F gates in the old Terminal 3. There you did security and customs or the global entry process and then headed to the actual boarding gates. There is a small lounge for business and first class passengers after clearance and right next to gates as well.
