Lots of travel blogs have covered this, and it's also explained in your account - basically you can call IHG any time from 14 - 1 day before your stay and they will confirm the upgrade then and there, if available. I'm assuming early summer will be a good time to ask as it's between peak travel periods and there's likely to be free inventory.
