Per the program:

This benefit is available for Platinum, Black and Black Signature members during the seat selection process, when checking-in online or via our Preferred Contact Center.
Were you successful in selecting a Latam+ seat for your companion by phone? I have made two attempts through the English preferred call center and was told it's not possible by phone and can only be done at the airport, although the terms state otherwise.
