I've now both taken a trip that was purchased on another card and closed a statement on the Brim card. I received the 5x accelerator on the trip paid for with another card, and my statement had no miles whatsoever for the AF/KL purchases. Utskicat, this is exactly how you described it, but as I said, it's bizarre in that it's incentivizing cardholders to spend elsewhere.

I would also suggest that earning zero miles on AF/KL purchases charged to the card is not in compliance with the Cardholder Agreement (§21), which says:
"You can earn miles under the Flying Blue Programme (“Miles”) when using your Card:
 • 2 Miles are earned for every dollar spent on Net Purchases made on your Card for food and drinks.*
 • 1 Mile is earned for every dollar spent on other Net Purchases made on your Card."

Money spent at AF/KL isn't food and drinks, so it should earn 1 mile per dollar on Net Purchases, outside of the 5x accelerator (there's nothing elsewhere in the section that excludes AF/KL purchases). It's all very poorly put together.

So when I spent another $6K on AF tickets earlier today, I put them on my Amex Platinum, and I look forward to my 2 MR per CAD on the full amount of the purchase plus an extra 5 points per EUR on the FB-eligible spend.
