You’ll notice the cabin was dark, despite being a day flight. The windows were locked out by the crew to discourage passengers from pressing the call bell (i.e. trying to send them to sleep). I sympathise with the crew, however when booking a day flight for a reason it is a bit annoying to have compulsory darkness.

I don’t sympathise with the crew in this case — when I take a day flight I often do so specifically to avoid the jet lag of a night flight and therefore keeping the cabin dark does not provide what I paid for when I bought the ticket. AA has got quite lazy and annoying about this issue:
