Actually, this is incorrect. Credit card, mortgage companies, etc. do this routinely. These inquiries show up on your report, although they don't "count against you" in terms of credit rating since they were not initiated by you. If you pull a copy of your credit report, though, you can see them. And I know that I didn't authorize each of those inquiries
