Bangkok's metro network is still being developed and has a few peculiarities, but it's cheap, fast, and air conditioned. The Airport Rail Link is cheap, frequent, and fairly fast. Certainly my preferred way to get to/from BKK.
the main line of the subway through the city is there for over 20 years now, it was built and opened shortly after the two first main lines of the sky train were opened. one of the two main intersection of the two systems is at Sukhumvit/Asoke intersection where I used to live during construction in the late nineties...
the airport rail link can be recommended if you do not have too much luggage with you
