FWIW, this is quite common with all the US airlines IME, and not just for Hawaii flights. They believe they can get a premium for the non-stop flights so they try not to give them away easily for miles.

For example, I can't count the number of times AA has offered me LGA-OMA-DFW, LGA-BNA-DFW, LGA-MCI-DFW, LGA-ATL-DFW for far far far less than LGA-DFW.
