Two questions for our resident experts

1) If for some reason SAS SkyTeam stops courtesy upgrades for Diamond/Pandion after switching to SkyTeam, are there other FF programs that give courtesy upgrades on transatlantic flights as generously (YMMV) as SAS?

I find this (unpublished) perk to be worth it’s weight in diamond (pun intended!). I haven’t found anything when searching flyertalk posts for KLM, AF, Delta, LH…

2) As some have reported, I also tend to receive courtesy upgrades on every other flight. And this tends to be in the direction of Europe-USA. My flights are usually booked as Europe-USA-Europe. If I wanted to try to get the courtesy upgrades on the USA-Europe (overnight) legs, do I need to book USA-Europe-USA? Any other ideas if it’s possible to shift the courtesy upgrade from Europe-USA to USA-Europe?
