Some airlines want docs checked before boarding, some look at all passports while boarding, some do face scan instead. I guess some are still doing the "did you pack your own bags" and putting a sticker on the passport. A bit more consistency (or at least advance notice) would be nice.
If I recall, AF JFK uses a facial scan, and I'm assuming if one's already in their system (which I assume we all are here in FT land), it should be fine. But, as you've observed, there's inconsistency at times even with the same carrier in the same country, e.g., one time at SFO, AF wanted me to check in at the counter, even though I had already done so online and with mobile BP in hand. So, I'm assuming had I ignore them on this, it would've beeped red during boarding.
