For KL/AF every time I travel to a destination outside EU, i check in online and usually if get an SMS that we need to update something, contact us at the gate. Then they just scan the passport. Not sure if it’s because I have a Greek passport. I think it’s happened to me once with UA and once with DL in the US that they had to also check the passport manually.
