If you have a boarding pass with a QR code or barcode, then you can go straight to the gate. They will check your passport upon boarding anyway.

US airlines in many cases require passengers to physically present their passport at check-in before they issue an international boarding pass, or to use an in-app scan tool (like AA), at least for some destinations.
