The continuing saga -
Closer examination of the 'receipt' shows it was just the original contract but resent on 11/28. I have spoken with customer service and loss prevention they maintain the contract is still open and the vehicle shows it is still out. Unable to get through to a person at the Avis Boston Logan location, I called another friendlier location and they confirm the vehicle status as out on rental / not checked in.
Loss prevention says based on information I gave to customer service it will take 3-5 days to finish an investigation and close (hopefully) the contract.
What a nightmare, especially having heard the horror stories about Hertz reporting cars as stolen with awful consequences. Ironic that at my most frequent rental location, Butte MT, there are only two choices: Avis or ... Hertz. In fairness I only have good things to say about that Hertz location.
One other possibility is that the vehicle, which I took out with (documented) damage went directly to the shop and thus staff did not close out the contract.
