I sorta look at that whole area - PS, Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells, Indio, Palm Desert - as one large 'metropolitan' area.
(Smaller, at least, than "Los Angeles"!)
But yeah, Rancho's a good 30-45 minutes from Palm Springs proper.
