My recent "car not returned' experience.
Rented at BOS 11/23-25 ( two days after Thanksgiving) on a prepaid reservation.
Returns lanes were packed; drove by 8-10 filled returns lanes before finding a free one. I leave the key on the dash as usual and the car was blocked in by another return.
I did not close out the reservation on the app. I've been conditioned that the return button doesn't work at my usual rental locations. Plus it was 5am ! No chance personnel were available to close the reservation. Fly home.
Three days later get a 'car overdue, please extend' text. Never had that happen before. Get the final receipt the same day. All good - charges as expected. Ignore the text.
Five days later get another text. Spend over an hour with reservations then customer service to be told everything is OK, which I knew.
Takeaways: try and use the return button in the app - maybe it will work. Take pictures / document the return if no agents to close out the reservation.
It was a mildly upsetting / scary experience and not something I've ever experienced or expected from Avis and I rent a lot.
