I saw online that a few people are selling the status passes but you have to provide them with your booking number and last name to transfer them to your account. My thoughts are that selling status passes is against the spirit or maybe even the letter of AC's terms around Aeroplan.
Purchasing them just encourages that behaviour. (Full disclosure: I've only ever given them away) And you are correct that there is the whole about giving your trip details to a stranger thing.
Only you can decide if the reward (and cost) is worth the perceived risk to you and your family's trip.
