Like the others wrote, don't trust everything bloggers said. Take everything with a grain of salt. As you know insurance claim is absolutely YMMV.
If you don't mind paying for it yourself - go for it, and you can try to claim it back and this way you won't get upset if they turn your claim down. When SAS cancelled our flight I specifically asked the limit of reimbursement and it was low (CAD 400/night for hotel and CAD 25 per meal). There were many hotels at YYZ but we ended up booking the 4 points as it was the cheapest with airport shuttle. Not the nicest hotel out there but if I had booked the Marriott FS I'd have to put up with the difference with I didn't really want to.
