24 hours vs next day - cancellation?

I made a booking yesterday with the 24 hour cancellation policy. In the past, this meant that one could cancel anytime the next business day up until end of the day. I've had this confirmed by SAS in the past and have done it successfully, e.g. early morning reservation one day, cancel the following evening for a full refund.

Today I needed to cancel our booking because our accommodation fell through and we need to re-think the trip and dates. When I phoned, the first agent told me that I was 2 hours too late for a refund (booking done at ca. 18:00 CET and it was now 20:00 CET). He said I could get credit for the amount that had to be used within a year, or I could rebook to other dates, but also claimed there would be a $300 per ticket fee in addition to any fare change.

When I booked, my fare was "rebookable" for any fare difference, but with no reference whatsoever to a change fee as well (this was in Business Smart).

I decided to HUCA, initially to discuss with my husband what we should do. But when I called back 15 minutes later and reached a different agent, he told me he could cancel for a full refund. I asked him to confirm multiple times that it was a full refund and he reiterated it was. This is what I anticipated based on past experience, but my exchange with the first rep makes me nervous.

Any recent experience here about cancelling the day after making a booking, but more than 24 hours? I also think the first rep was incorrect about the $300 change fee, but don't know where to find this should it come up again.
