That's a frustrating story and disappointing information from AS (if correct).
I recommend using the formal complaint tool to contact AS regarding this matter to ensure that you are receiving accurate information. I mention this because I have often received wrong or contradictory information from AS phone agents.
Personally, I book most of my trips last minute. As a 100K, if this happened to me and AS said the same thing I would be livid too.
Note: I don’t know the downgrade procedure. I have asked, but AS did not disclose it.
