I booked my brother in law on one of the fly three fly free promotions. There was ticketing problem so I called AA to fix which they did. I rechecked the PNR and yes it was all taken care of except for the remark that AADVMBR or PAX with same surname must pick up ticket. My brother in law (not the same last name) lives near DFW and I live near MKE! So I called back and had them fix it and I verified it with expertflyer. Had I not had access to the pnr - chances are I never would have known until it was too late!!
As I said it paid for itself with this one incident.
why didnt they just issue an e-ticket?
