I agree, but the OP still has a legitimate complaint in that it sems the agents they spoke to were too clueless to explain the situation.
Honestly...based on OPs responses to date, I don't think this was a calm and engaged discussion that they were willing to discuss with the agent. I get the sense there was a level of... "Well this is an Alaska ticket, you need to fix it" contrary to anything the AS rep would have said.
