Definitely makes American/Delta look more attractive for business class bookings.
Only if the segment you're booking in the future and the final segment you end up changing to meet combinability requirements. domestic? Good chance you'll find a set of a fares that work. International? Fat chance, especially as most fares limit the amount of inter-area crossings on top of combinability restrictions.
