Your passports will be returned at the boarding gate (from my similar experience).

T2 doesn't shut down, so people should be able to buy food (there are water fountains, as well as places selling bottled water).

MH should provide coupons for food (and a hotel), but that's on the airline. The 8 hour delay is most likely due to immigration paperwork (unless people have visa free entry to India, which is unlikely on the DOH - KUL route).
