TAP system flags unpaid amounts at the gate for bags and seats.
Flew TAP earlier in the week and didn’t realize TAP system is programmed to look back at the benefits received on elite status.
Bought basic fare that included a bag and put in my Star Gold number which resulted in an additional bag for free. Checked in no problem with fast track and lounge access. In the lounge I asked to see if I can change seats and change my FFN number because I need some more status miles in another program. The lounge person changed my seat to a more forward seat and also swapped out the FFN number and reprinted boarding pass.
Upon boarding at gate, the security beeped and couple times and the agent said I had an outstanding amount due of 55€ for an excess bag and 26€ for a seat assignment. Pretty much surprised that TAPs system goes back AFTER checkin bags and an agent assisted seat change that required additional payment. The gate agent was able to remove the seat charge but was unable to remove the “2nd bag” charge. I asked him to replace the FFN back to the star gold and the baggage charge disappeared and was allowed to board.
Not sure what would have happened if I didn’t identify the star gold benefit. I would think once checked in, either they took the payment before processing the bag, or would let it go… apparently not on TAP.
