Holiday Inn Frankfurt Alte Oper
What is your Priority Club status?
Ambassador Diamond
Were you (or for multi-stayers are you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?
In general yes.
This time I stayed just one night. The hotel lowered the room rates significantly in the week prior to my stay, so that I moved this night from the CP to this one.
I booked a Standard Room on an advanced purchase rate and was upgraded to an Executive Room during check-in. At least this was what the App mentioned.
My room was located on the top floor (7th floor). Right next to the entrance was the bathroom with shower, sink and toilet. Storage space next to the sink was good. Hairdryer was wall mounted, which is rare these days. Mirror was not heated. A bathrobe but no slippers were provided.
The bathroom door was also the sliding door for the closet. Iron and ironing board and safe were placed in the closet.
What was different from the usual or standard room, was that one had to walk around the bathroom to reach the bed. This lead to a slightly narrow and cramped feeling. This room type also comes with a balcony on the sixth floor.
There was a large bed with two bedside tables and wall mounted reading lamp on both sides. An armchair with a lamp was located in front of the windows. Windows could be opened. My room was facing Francois-Mitterrand-Platz, which was in regard to noise okay.
Desk with two outlets was next to the entrance opposite the entranced to the bathroom. Nespresso (pad) machine was placed in the hallway from the desk to the bed.
Minibar with non-alcoholic drink was free of charge. The Kitkat seems no longer to be part of the Minibar. And the Minibar was not really cooling this time – I had experienced this in another room in summer as well. Only two pad for the Nespresso Machine seems to be a bit stingy. No kettle in this room. I received a packet of pretzels sticks and a business card of the manager instead of a welcome letter. Some cutbacks me thinks.
Mattress was okay. Quite firm which I like
A small fitness center is available in the basement. Breakfast is served from 06:30 to 10:00 on weekday and till 11:00 on weekends.
The lobby is medium sized. There is a PC terminal next to the entrance. The check in desk are on the right side.
Breakfast is buffet with hot and cold items. Fried potatoes, scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, grilled mushroom and baked beans were available this time. Also pancakes and oatmeal. Cheese, pastrami, salami, salmon were available as cold items. Fruit salad, sliced and cut melons and pineapples and cereals were on offer. I found the selection on bread, rolls, pastries and pretzel quite extensive.
Coffee and tea were self service. Instead of the bottled fruit juices, there is now a dispenser. Unfortunately this meant no longer tomato juice. And in my opinion also lower quality (despite the same brand). And there were also some items removed from the buffet, so one slice of salmon is available on a small plate instead, black forest ham seems to be no longer available, and the quality of the scrambled eggs are also not as good as before (very watery). These are my experiences from a couple of stays here since February.
Check In was quick with not waiting time on a Friday afternoon at 14:40. Two agents were available. Status was recognized and it was mentioned that I received an upgrade and was asked of my choice as Diamond Amenity.
For check out I used Express Check out as there was a long slowly moving line of 17 persons. A did not need a late check out. However I had to request the invoice to be mailed to me, this did not happen automatically
Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Booked Standard and received Executive Room overlooking Francois-Mitterrand-Platz on the top floor
How are the rooms?
The hotel is not that old and the rooms show a little bit of wear, but nothing serious. What I really dislike of this room type is the layout. The room appeared narrow and cramped. I like the standard layout much more as it had a larger feeling.
The real desk was nice to have. Internet speed was okay. The login page was changed since my last report. The system connects automatically now.
Water pressure of the shower was good. A glass door which really closes and thus no flooding of the bathroom. A big mirror was also available. Shower gel, conditioner, shampoo and lotion were wall mounted (Dove). Two small, medium and large towels were provided.
The room had blinds which really darkens the room. Windows could be opened, but there could be some street noise. The room facing the back are usually more quiet. But the building next door is now (finally) redone and during the week there could be some noise from the construction work.
The advanced rate was 94 EUR / night.
How is the exec. lounge?
N/A
What was good and what was bad?
Good
Rooms are of good size with real desk
Good connection to public transport
Windows could be opened
Staff is friendly and helpful
Neutral
Location close to red light district is not liked by everybody, I know Frankfurt and this area and okay with it.
keycard needed for power and room
Cost cutting measures in regard to breakfast buffet and at coffee pad
Bad
no weights / body machines in the gym; gym has not window
Lack of USB Ports
Layout of my room
Value for $ or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
The location is still good. The standard shaped rooms are of a good size, the one at the smaller part of the two top floors are not as nice. Main Station and Taunusanlage Station is a five minutes walk away. Staff is usually friendly.
Room are well maintained. The upgrade to a room with a free minibar as part of the upgrade is nice. In so far, the hotel and the consistency of the upgrade is quite good. Unfortunately rates are not often below 100 EUR, but it helps to check the rates. Quite often the hotel lowers the rates.
I will return, as it still offers a good value for money, but as frequent guest you notice some cost cutting measures.
